I tried not to feel anything. In truth, it was easy enough. I could not feel any single thing for more than a moment before another emotion surged to take its place; it was almost easier to float, numb and lost, than it was to try to cling to anger or fear…or hope. I wanted him to have a good explanation, one that was so perfect that there would be no way to doubt him anymore. I wanted him to have evidence that it had been Sebastian who killed Kelly.

I knew instead, with sick certainty, that this was one of the times when hope would be fatal. So I chose to feel nothing, floating beyond the shame of the fact that Dominick’s driver had almost certainly heard me begging to be fucked, beyond the shame and anger that I had truly believed Dominick would want me, and me alone. Beyond the shame that I had become the pawn of the man I had sworn to destroy. I felt nothing, walking silently at Dominick’s side as he led me to his apartment.

I stood in the middle of the living room with my coat over my arm, wondering what to do next, as he crossed to the sideboard. He took two glasses and hesitated a moment before choosing a decanter.

“Scotch?”

“It’s 9 in the morning,” I said blankly.

I saw it, just for a moment—the flash of what would have been anger with someone else, and the assertion that he didn’t give a damn what social convention said. With me, it was humor, the sort of terrible joke that said the world was falling apart around us, so what did it matter if we had a drink before noon? And before I could tell myself not to, I smiled back.

Our smiles died in the same moment, and he looked away as he poured. He carried them back to the couches and set my glass down before settling into an armchair. That left the couch to me, and I was glad of it. I could still feel him between my legs, and his touch would have been too much. I sat, tentatively, and after a moment picked up the glass.

He said nothing for a very long time, and when I looked up at last, I found him staring at me with a look I could not interpret. After a moment, he took a sip of the scotch, and seemed to come to a decision.

“To understand Kelly—my relationship with her—you need to understand my father, and my brother. They were…very much alike.”

I waited, holding my glass. I had a sense that if I tried to take a sip, my hand would shake too much for me to hold the glass steady.

“There’s no need to tell old stories. I will only say that they were not nice men.” The habitual evenness of his voice often sparked desire in my blood; this time, it was terrifying. I knew, in scope if not in detail, just how much he was not telling me.
